Residents of Mamelodi East, Pretoria, were left shaken after discovering the bodies of Tshiamo Moramaga (21) and Baleseng Moramaga (22) on Sunday morning.
The brutal murder has sparked outrage and added to the growing concerns about Gender-Based Violence in South Africa, especially in townships.
Resident Thuli Ncgobo described the cousins as vibrant, outspoken and inseparable young women, leaving the community devastated over their loss.
“From half past four, we have been hearing sounds and when we went outside, there were people around this area and there were two bodies lying down. Those two girls, I know them very well, they used to be my customers buying from me every time when they come from school, they were university students.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities has welcomed the swift arrest of a suspect linked to the brutal killing of two young women.
Ministry spokesperson, Cassius Selala, has condemned the act of violence that has once again robbed families and communities of young lives.
“The arrest represents a crucial step towards justice for the victims and their loved ones and sends a clear message that perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide will face the full might of the law. Minister Chikunga expressed her appreciation for the law enforcement authorities for their rapid response and urged the criminal justice system to ensure that justice is served without delay.”
