Mamelodi family hostage ends in double tragedy


The 16-hour hostage situation in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, has ended in devastation following unsuccessful attempts by police’s hostage negotiators.

The police constable, who allegedly held two of his family members hostage, has shot himself dead in the early hours of this morning.

This happened shortly after he agreed to release his mother. She was rushed to hospital.

Police say an 18-year-old boy was also found dead with gunshot wounds inside the house.

Tshwane police district commissioner, Major General Samuel Thine explains, “Negotiators were still negotiating to see if the constable would come out. In the process, while the team was approaching, just before they entered the house. Two shots were heard. And as they checked inside the house.”

“It was found that the constable had taken his life. He committed suicide. The 18-year-old was unfortunately found. He passed, and there were gunshot wounds on the 18-year-old.”

According to the police, Constable Thapelo Mashigo, who is 32 years old, joined the service in 2019 and was based at the Boschkop Police Station.

Meanwhile, the Tshwane MMC for Environmental Management and Agriculture, Obakeng Ramabodu, who was at the scene, has called for the enhancement of mental health support services for members of the South African Police.

The Police say a case of murder, kidnapping, as well as an inquest will be registered at the Mamelodi East Police Station.
