Malatsi backs digital growth, urges content responsibility

Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi says government wants to create an enabling environment for digital media platforms as job creators while ensuring responsible content production.

His comments follow government’s plans to drive investment towards expanding opportunities in the digital sector for young people.

Parliament has also given the podcasting industry six months to develop its own self-regulatory code of conduct.

Malatsi spoke to SABC News on the sidelines of the SA Investment Conference.

“It’s first to recognise that the podcast sector is a growing sector of multimedia and digital news consumption. That means that it is always going to spark debates about how we make that, from government’s perspective, we create an enabling environment for that sector to grow. So, when you look in terms of the number of young people it provides with sustainable livelihoods, we have to be intentional in supporting them. There is also a growing concern about the risk of misinformation and disinformation and even derogatory content that some of these podcasters distribute and, on that, we are looking at retaining a good balance which doesn’t harm the dignity of people.”
