‘Maintenance, failure of some units blamed for current load shedding’

Electricity Minister, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, says a combination of setbacks experienced by power utility Eskom, including a failure of certain units as well as aggressive maintenance in preparation for winter, is the reason for the resumption of rolling blackouts.

Ramokgopa has been addressing the media following the utility ramping up load shedding to stage six in the early hours of the morning.

Eskom had declared Stage 3 load shedding yesterday evening.

Ramokgopa ruled out sabotage as a cause for the rolling blackouts.

The return of power cuts followed over 20 days of uninterrupted electricity supply.

Eskom says the implementation of Stage 6 load shedding from 01:30 this morning will enable it to replenish emergency reserves and prepare for the week ahead.

Meanwhile, the power utility’s CEO, Dan Marokane says they are hoping efforts to return units to service could result in the easing of power cuts by tomorrow.
