Residents complains that their houses flood during heavy rains.
Residents of Extension 39 in Mahikeng, North West are calling for the authorities to install stormwater drainage in their area.
They maintain that during rainy weather, their houses flood and furniture damaged. This comes after Mahikeng and the surrounding areas have experienced torrential rains since last night.
Some of the residents have started to count their losses. Some houses in Extension 39 were submerged in water following an overnight rainfall.
Some residents are unable to enter their homes due to flooded homes. Others were busy trying to dry their belongings while others tried to rid their homes of water.
Mpho Phogojane of Extension 39, who is living with her children says, she lost her chickens and her other belongings.
“My house is full of water. I had chickens. They drowned. The furniture in my house is all damaged including the food that I had for my children. At the present moment, the water is still in the house. My kids cannot even play outside or even step on the floor inside the house.”
Others lost their necessities like groceries.
Mahikeng local municipality MMC for Public Safety Baratang Mathe says the extent of the damages in the area will be assessed.
“We need to assess the situation in each and every individual household so that we can come up with measures to assist them. We cannot just say we can assist them with this without assessing.”
Residents meanwhile are fearful that they might lose even more if the torrential rain persists.
