Outata Kambule has created an artwork to mark South Africa’s 30 years of democracy
An artist from Mahikeng in the North West, Outata Kambule, has created an artwork to mark South Africa’s 30 years of democracy and its current political transition. He built an intricate ancient ship similar to those of the Dutch East Indian Company that arrived in the Cape in 1652.
It tells the story of South African history and the seven administrations that have governed the country. 54-year-old Kambule, who is unemployed, believes ships play a significant role in the history of South Africa.
“This is how I can summarise the whole of South Africa as it is, at large, with its political landscape, into a shorter piece of art. I was just covering the context of the incidents that we are having currently, what we South Africans are going through right now,”
He says his inspiration is from the dawn of the democracy to this very day and where we are, as a country, are headed to.
