Maharaj produces career best figures as Proteas thrash Aussies

South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj produced career-best figures as the Proteas took a one-nil lead in the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Australia.

They beat their hosts by 98 runs in Cairns.

Three major contributions by the visitors’ top order allowed the Proteas to post the highest ever innings total in an ODI at the Cazalys Stadium.

They amassed 296 for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs.

Opening batter, Aiden Markram, captain Temba Bavuma and Matthew Breetzke all scored half centuries.

Maharaj then took five for 33 in his 10 overs as Australia were bowled out for 198 in the 41st over.

Captain Mitchell Marsh stood firm, making 88 off 96 deliveries, but he didn’t have much support.

The second match of the serfies takes place on Friday in Mackay, also in Queensland.
