Madlanga Commission to decide whether Carrim will testify in camera

The Madlanga Commission will on Monday hand down a ruling in Pretoria, which will determine if North-West businessman Suliman Carrim’s testimony will be heard in camera.

His legal counsel has argued Carrim’s life has been threatened.

However, evidence leader Adila Hassim has argued that the threats against Carrim’s life have not been linked to his appearance at the Commission.

“Mr. Carrim attaches text messages that he has received from unknown numbers, which appear to be threatening. We don’t know the context, further context, of those text messages. We don’t know what the potential sources are of those text messages. We don’t know whether there’s any hostility or dispute that’s happening within Mr. Karim’s workplace that may give rise to this. We don’t know what the source of the threats are,” argued Hassim.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa and various members of his Executive will take part in oral question sessions this week.

Ministers of the social cluster, that includes Health, Social Development and Human Settlements, will be in the hot seat on Wednesday while ministers from Basic Education and Higher Education will answer oral questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Tuesday.

Ramaphosa will, among others, field questions about the full implementation of  National Health Insurance and why he decided to keep the interim report from the Madlanga
Commission confidential.
