During the last festive season, the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was disbanded by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is now on special leave.
Months later, on 6th of July, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi held a media briefing in which he accused senior police officials and top politicians of deliberately dismantling the task team probing political killings in the province.
MKhwanazi alleged that PKTT failed to investigate politically motivated killings claiming that top politicians, specifically naming Mchunu as government official protecting drug cartels and also disturbing police investigatiions, especially within the task team.
This saw the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to probe the claims of political interference as well as corruption withing the South African Police Service (SAPS).
