Madlanga Commission on track to deliver interim report

Madlanga Commission of Inquiry Spokesperson Jeremy Michaels says the commission is on track to deliver an interim report expected mid-December. Speaking during an interview on Morning Live, Michaels says the deadline for the final report is within six months.

The Madlanga Commission is investigating KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations of political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.

In terms of the final report, Michaels says the commission is in contact with President Cyril Ramaphosa to adjust the deadline of the final report.

“The commission had been given, in terms of the terms of reference,  three months to complete its interim report and then, of course, President Ramaphosa had in the terms of reference stipulated that the final report must be within six months. As we have said a number of times, the time frames were quite tight given what we are dealing with, the scope of the inquiry and also on a daily basis in the hearings, there are new developments, new implicated persons, clearly, it is going to take more time. Justice Madlanga is in discussions with President Ramaphosa regarding the adjustment of the timeline.”

The commission is continuing on Tuesday with testimony from Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo, who was unable to continue his testimony last month because of ill-health.

Hawks Divisional Commissioner Patrick Mbotho, on Monday, testified on allegations of Hawks members’ interference in police operations to arrest businessman and murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Michaels says in phase two of the hearings, those implicated will have an opportunity to respond.

“Phase one is to hear the allegations by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the substantiation and corroboration of those allegations throughout phase one, and then in the next fortnight or so, we will enter phase two, where we start to hear the other side of the story, so to speak. You can expect that quite a number of the implicated in the videos will come before the commission, but clearly, the timeline towards the end of the year, we are going to run into 2026, both with phases one and two.”
