Madlanga Commission hit by delays following procurement challenges

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system says its hearing will not start on September 1 as it had initially planned.

The Commission says via a statement that the delays are a result of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development failure to procure infrastructure requirements.

“Regrettably, the Commission is now left with no choice but to reschedule the starting date. What is most regrettable is that a substantial portion of the three-month period at the end of which the Commission is expected to submit an interim report has gone by without the Commission having heard a single witness,” reads the statement.

The Commission says as a result of the delays, it will not be able to submit its interim report in the first three months as expected.

Earlier this month, the Commission announced that the Department of Justice was responsible for logistics, while the Department of Public Works was preparing the venue.

The hearings, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, were scheduled to take place at the Bridgette Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria.

President Cyril Ramaphosa established the inquiry in a bid to address KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations and to regain the public’s trust.
