Minister Dean Macpherson in Parliament
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson says he also has questions about the R800 million oxygen plant tender awarded by the Independent Development Trust (IDT).
He was asked for an update on the saga during question time to Economics Cluster Ministers in the National Assembly.
The department appointed an audit firm to investigate allegations of fraud and corruption around this process.
Since then, it’s been recommended that disciplinary action be taken against IDT CEO Tebogo Malaka. McPherson was asked why he has not yet been fired or arrested.
“The one thing that has astounded me during the IDT scandal is not so much the questions as to the conduct of the IDT, but to continually repeat false narratives to delegitimise the investigation into the IDT and cover it up. I think that that has really, really worried me as to why that took place among so many political parties. The reality is I do not conduct disciplinary cases against CEOs, that is with the board. I do however think that your question would also be appropriate to the minister of police, or the acting minister of police.”
