Lusikisiki mass murder trial set to resume in the Mthatha High Court

The trial of six men accused of the murder of 18 people at Ngobozana village in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape is expected to resume on Tuesday.

One of the accused who turned state witness, Lwando Abi, will continue to be cross-examined by accused number two’s defence attorney when the trial resumes in the Mthatha High Court special sitting in Lusikisiki.

Accused number two, Aphiwe Ndende’s lawyer, Mawande Nokhwali, took Abi through his evidence-in-chief, where Abi told the court that upon seeing his photo on social media as being wanted by the police, he approached his police friend, Anele Madotyeni, in order for him to accompany him to hand himself over to the police.

He testified that Madotyeni then called a certain policewoman attached to the Organised Crime unit for her to meet with Abi, but Nokhwali argued that Madotyeni’s intention to call the policewoman was to level the ground for Abi to evade arrest, something Abi disputed.

The eighteen family members were fatally shot by unknown gunmen while asleep in their family homestead in 2024.

The accused are facing a string of charges, including multiple counts of murder, kidnapping and possession of unlicenced firearms.
