Parliament has confirmed that the salaries of the lowest paid workers of the institution will be increased over the next three years.

The employees, who are set to benefit in the salary hike, include cleaners and those who are in the catering services.

They were employed by service providers before 2018 and the services of those independent contractors were not renewed.

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers (Nehawu) says this decision by the management is the victory for workers.

Nehawu chairperson Sthembiso Tembe says: “So we believe that this decision is very important. It’s a victory for workers. It’s a victory for union to ensure we improve the conditions of employment of workers. So, we are happy about the decision. But we also understand that in as much as we would have wanted this decision to be implemented immediately without waiting for 2026, but we understand that the institution is facing serious financial constraints, hence we are going to wait, and we have accepted the progressive implementation of this decision. So, we are happy about that. It is the responsibility of the union to negotiate and fight for better working conditions and better payment for workers. So as the union we are happy about this decision.”
