Lobby group calls on government to declare GBVF as a national emergency.
Civil rights organisation, NotInMyName International, has called on government to declare gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) a national emergency.
The renewed calls follow the shooting of two women, Tshiamo and Baleseng Moramaga, in Pretoria over the weekend.
The women, aged 22 and 21, were found dead on the side of the road with gunshot wounds to the head in Mamelodi East, Extension 17.
The motive for the shooting is not yet known; however, a 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murders.

The organisation’s Secretary-General, Themba Masango says, “GBV needs to be treated as a national emergency and there needs to be political and judicial consequences because if those who are in power are just talking about femicide as something to tick off a political box, it won’t work.”
“We need to have a situation where these people are arrested, there’s clear consequences to it. You can’t have someone who has done a heinous act such as this getting arrested and then tomorrow you find them out on bail. Those are things that need to be changed. We need to make sure that specialised units are focusing on this issue.”
