Emotional scenes are playing out at the funeral service for the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League deputy president – Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe – in Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.
The Women’s League president, Sisisi Tolashe, and Mnganga-Gcabashe’s family members could not hold back tears at various stages of the service.
The 64-year-old passed away last weekend after a short illness.

The ICC arena was packed with thousands of mourners. Mnganga-Gcabashe’s niece, Thabile Mnganga-Gcabashe, could not hold back tears after ending the obituary with these words.
“Your good deed will remain in the hearts of those you touched. You fought a good fight. Yours was a good life, a life well lived because it was lived in the service of others.”
‘Best friend’
The message from Mnganga-Gcabashe’s daughter, Sphelele, was read to the mourners as she was overcome by emotion. In her message, she remembered a mother who was not only an activist and politician, but also her best friend.
“Your elegance, wisdom, fire, and love all wrapped up in love, stylish, funny, sharp, deeply loving, and proud of everything you stood for. Your legacy will forever be my motivation,n and I will strive to make you proud every day. I love you dearly and I miss you more than words can express.”
