Lions dominate Bulls with 44-5 victory

The Lions have triumphed in the Juskei Derby against the Bulls. The Lions defeated the Pretoria outfit in emphatic fashion in their Currie Cup clash at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, winning by 39 points, the score 44-5.

The Lions started with a no-nonsense approach, putting their first points on the board off a penalty of fly-half Chris Smith in the second minute of the game.

They too were first to cross the whitewash at Ellis Park. Using the momentum off a driving maul to attack the game line, former Bulls player Smith recorded his first try in a Lions jersey.

The Bulls responded almost immediately as Jaco van der Walt danced past the homeside’s defence.

The hosts scored another try in very similar fashion to their first but this time it was SJ Kotze who charged over the line and it was the Lions who led at half-time by 20 points to five.

The homeside struck again early in the second half. Again, they were too strong for their opponents in the driving maul and it was captain PJ Botha who scored the five points.

The contest got a bit a scrappy after that, with both team’s losing a player to the sinbin for dangerous tackles.

It was the Lions though who capitalized as centre Richard Kriel split the defense to touch down for their fourth try, securing a bonus point victory.

Sam Francis also gave the home fans something to celebrate as he too crossed the whitewash for his first try of the season.

Another bad decision in defense saw the Bulls gift the Lions their final score of the match in the final minutes as they secured a 44-5 victory.
