Meanwhile, 20 new babies have been delivered in Free State hospitals on New Year’s Day. Eight girls and 12 boys were born in various health institutions in the province.
Sister Puseletso Rens, head of nursing at National Hospital in Bloemfontein, says this is an exciting time to help mothers deliver new babies on the first day of the new year.
“You know at this time of the year, we are really motivated because we are welcoming our new lives, actually our newborns, so it’s the only time that we at least get inspired. Despite the challenges that we face at the hospital, shortages of staff and so forth, but at this time of the year, we really feel blessed. We are really honoured to have this newborns that were born today on the first of January 2026. We are blessed.”
