A 58-year-old teacher who allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl at a primary school in Makotopong outside Polokwane in Limpopo is today expected to apply for bail in the Mankweng Magistrates’ Court.
The teacher allegedly repeatedly raped the Grade 7 learner from July last year.
Internal investigations by the Department of Education into the teacher’s conduct have ceased after he resigned.
The teacher was arrested after the school principal laid a rape charge against him last month, after catching him with the Grade 7 learner at the school office.
Residents have since alleged that he may also have raped three other minors over the years.
Community leader Michael Lekota says security is needed at schools.
“The teachers are parents of our kids. So, if they are the ones who are doing this to our kids, we don’t know anymore where to go. The police were searching him. We don’t know what is happening, the guy was not arrested, they are busy searching for him. We need security at schools. I think that one can help our kids,” says Lekota.
