A 58-year-old teacher has been arrested for allegedly repeatedly raping a 13-year-old learner at a primary school outside Polokwane, Limpopo.

Provincial Education Department spokesperson Mike Maringa says the teacher was found with the learner at the school office on Thursday.

Maringa says social workers have been dispatched to counsel the learner, while police investigations continue.

“The Limpopo Department of Education commends the principal of the school where the 13-year-old is a learner, who took the effort to report the matter for further handling by police. We are sending social workers, since the schools are now on recess, to further take the matter up with the family and the learner at home. We shall await the investigation by the police, and as a department. We will also lodge our internal investigation to ascertain what has transpired,” Maringa explains.
