Limpopo sweet potato yoghurt sparks international interest

A 35-year-old Limpopo entrepreneur has unearthed a hidden opportunity in the yoghurt industry.

Edward Kgarose, who is from Molepo, outside Polokwane, is crafting a unique sweet potato-flavoured drinking yoghurt. He launched the factory for his business in 2016.

Kgarose’s products are sold in selected supermarkets in the province. He says he plans to expand his business.

“I want to see the product available nationally and exported because they are closed from international countries. I receive calls from countries like Nigeria, Uganda and Canada saying they need the product because they see it as something new, unique and very healthy,” says Kgarose.

“Everyone is amazed on how one can make yoghurt out of sweet potatoes,” he adds.

He says his wish is to avail it nationally and internationally.

“Hopefully, sometime next year we will be producing somewhere over 14 000 ml daily and that is when we will be able to avail it nationally and then on the international market,” Kgarose adds.

Some of Kgarose’s employees say his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation have inspired many people.

“I am excited to be a part of this company because the government is unable to create enough jobs for all of us. As the company grows, it will create more jobs and help take young people off the streets. I am thrilled to be part of this ground-breaking company, the first in South Africa to produce yoghurt from sweet potatoes. It has provided employment opportunities for us and I’m delighted that it will continue to create jobs for many others. I wish the company all the best as it grows and expands beyond South Africa’s borders,” says an employee.
