The Limpopo Social Development Department has warned families against taking their loved ones to unregistered care facilities.
MEC Florence Radzilani visited two centres to monitor the quality of care.
Radzilani’s spokesperson Joshua Kwapa says they found inhumane living conditions at the centres in Nebo and Phokwane in the Sekhukhune District.
Kwapa says some of people sleep on the floor while food and sanitation are inadequate.
“Families of people suffering from mental health and those who are intellectually challenged need to ensure that they enlist such people at facilities that are registered and are suitable in all material aspects that cater for their needs. Those operating unregistered facilities are warned to desist from such practices as they violate the rights of the people entrusted in their care,” states Kwapa.
