Limpopo police hunt suspect in baby rape case

Limpopo police are looking for a man suspected to have raped a baby in Lusaka village outside Tzaneen.

The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday when the baby, who is one year and eight months old, was sleeping with two family members.

The baby’s aunt made the discovery after hearing the infant crying.

Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba says the child was taken to a local hospital, where the rape was confirmed.

Mashaba says, “According to the preliminary report, a 44-year-old woman had gone to sleep with her daughter and her niece; she was awakened by the sound of a garage door closing. She then heard the infant crying. She discovered the child lying in the passage and immediately took her to bed, where she discovered that the infant had been sexually molested.”

“The victim was immediately taken to the local hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the incident. The suspect remains unknown. The provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, together with the district commissioner of Mopani, has visited the family to offer support,” adds Mashaba.
