Scene of the fatal accident
Limpopo Transport MEC Violet Mathye has sent a condolences to the family of the five inmates and the police officer who died during an accident between the police van and a truck on the R101 between Mokopane and Mookgophong.
Police say the officer was transporting 11 inmates to the Mookgophong Magistrate’s Court.
Preliminary investigations show that he attempted to overtake the truck and collided with it and overturned.
The families of the police officer and one of the inmates were at the scene.
The inmate’s family had been waiting to support him in court when they were informed of the crash.

MEC Mathye says that the families will receive psychological support.
“The family are devastated, there is nothing much that they are saying except to say for them it is traumatizing because for the family this is the second incident for them. So, for now they are heartbroken but time will heal. A mistake has happened as per the preliminary report that I got our officer and the truck, one was overtaking that is why the van capsized and killed six people. The family is devastated.”
