Limpopo flood victims call for urgent provincial govt intervention


Flood victims in Makhuva Village outside Giyani in Limpopo are calling for the provincial government’s urgent intervention.

Some have lost all their belongings after their houses were flooded following heavy rains.

A poultry farmer, Thomas Xitlhangu, has lost more than 280 chickens.

The area is near Mbaula Village in which flood waters have flattened 35 houses and swept away a five-year-old boy who is still missing.

These flood victims say they desperately need humanitarian assistance.

“I have lost all my chickens as well as 11 bags of feed, my groceries got swept away as well. I do not have anything to eat now, the house is full of water, up to today. Makhuva community has not receive any help, so we are urging anyone who can help to offer something so that the people who lost everything can get helped, but so far, we did not get help in this disaster.”

Meanwhile, authorities in Limpopo say rescue teams will continue to search for three people who have been swept away in flood waters following heavy rains.

The Somali national and two other people were trying to cross a submerged bridge in Tswinga Village outside Thohoyandou when they were swept away.

Some residents have been unable to cross the bridge over the Mutale River which has burst its banks.

This resident Mulalo Ramakhuba, says he was forced to leave his vehicle after failing to cross the bridge.
