Limpopo farmers hit hard by fuel levy hike

1 minute

Emerging farmers in Limpopo have expressed concern over the increase in the fuel levy, which Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana recently announced in his third budget speech.

The fuel levy for diesel and petrol has been adjusted to increase by 15 and 16 cents per litre, respectively. Some small-scale farmers say they are worried that paying more for fuel will increase their production costs.

“The fertilisers and the chemicals are already high, and already we have been affected by the floods, that season we did not make money. Now it will be worse because the petrol is increasing. Personally, I deliver some of the products to the market, and I also am using diesel at my farm to irrigate, as I do not have electricity, so you can just imagine that every day we buy fuel.”
