The Limpopo Department of Transport has raised alarm over a surge in attacks on motorists who stop to assist hitchhikers. The department says there is a growing number of cases where groups posing as taxi patrollers commit acts of violence, vandalism and extortion.
Transport MEC Susani Mathye recently convened a meeting with taxi associations, including SANTACO and NTA, along with the police, to find ways to address the crimes.

Department spokesperson Tshifhiwa Dali says, “The meeting was prompted by a recent surge in incidents of taxi patrollers. In response, the Department of Transport and Community Safety is implementing measures aimed at discouraging hitchhiking and promoting the use of formal, legal transport services. To further support this initiative, municipalities across the province will be encouraged to erect ‘No Hitch-hiking’ signage in known hotspots. The department will intensify law enforcement targeting illegal modes of transport,” said MEC Mathye.
“We urge taxi patrollers to seize any unlawful activities.”
