Some community-based organisations in Limpopo will be participating in the national women’s shutdown tomorrow.
Scores of people are expected to march in major towns and cities in the province, including Polokwane, Thohoyandou, and Tzaneen.
The movement organisers, non-profit group Women for Change, says the shutdown aims to put pressure on government to declare gender-based violence and femicide a national disaster.
Gender based violence survivor, Tshinanne Siobo says, “I have learnt that staying with an abusive partner is not good, as he will one day kill you. I was in the ICU for a long time, and when I woke up, all I wanted was to see my son, only to be told that he had passed away. That relationship took everything from me, my son and my house. If I had left immediately when I first saw that he was beating me and shouting, all this would not have happened. I hope that women will choose themselves over everything and leave abusive partners before they end up in a coffin.”
Another GBV survivor has advised the victims to speak out.
“I would advice everyone who is going through such a situation that you have to find some that you know you can talk to talk to some we have social workers we have NPO, we must talk to them they will keep you safe.”
