Limpopo bus crash death toll standing at five

The death toll in a bus crash that occurred on the N1 outside Louis Trichardt in Limpopo now stands at five. Four people were declared dead at the scene, while a fifth person died in the hospital.

Preliminary investigations by the Department of Transport indicate that the bus lost control along a curvy mountain pass.

The bus was travelling from Gauteng to Musina when it rolled down an embankment in the early hours of the morning.

Passengers, who sustained minor to serious injuries, were taken to the nearby hospitals.

The road remained closed most of the day as the bus was being removed from the bottom of the slope.

The bus, which is owned by Interlink Coaches, was transporting about 40 passengers when it overturned.

Interlink Coaches Spokesperson, Poscent Ndlovu, says the bus was roadworthy.

“I’m 100% sure that it was roadworthy…the guy who hired the bus was going to Sasol garage in Musina and the from Sasol garage, he was going to proceed with the bus to Zimbabwe.”

The mountain pass is considered a high accident zone. In October last year, another bus rolled down the embankment at the same location. -Report by Nsuku Shiluvana
