Lily Mine families accuse government of inaction ahead of SONA

Families of three Lily Mine employees trapped underground in Barberton, Mpumalanga, have again accused the government of failing to retrieve their remains, nine years after the mine collapse.

Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi, and Solomon Nyirenda were inside a container used as a lamp room when the mine caved in. Their families will commemorate the tragedy today.

Family spokesperson Harry Mazibuko says they do not expect any progress to come from the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA).

“As we’re heading to the State of the Nation Address, as the families, we’re not expecting the president to mention the issue. However, even if he mentioned the issue, all we need is action upon the issue of which we believe. Even if he says a few words, that will be it. There will be no progress or action taken after that. There were many SONA’s that have passed, and the issue of Lily Mine has never been entertained,” Mazibuko said.
