Lillian Ngoyi Street phase 1 rehabilitation to be completed in August

1 minute

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says the first phase of the Lillian Ngoyi Street rehabilitation will be completed in August this year and the rest of the project in 2026.

Morero was briefing members of the media on the progress made on the repair project.

He was accompanied by the City’s MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene and Johannesburg Roads Agency CEO Zweli Nyathi.

The street, formerly known as Bree Street, caved in after an underground methane gas explosion, leaving one person dead and 41 injured in July 2023.

The repair project has been marred by delays following a dispute between the city and the contractor.

Morero says the dispute has since been resolved and a new company has started.

He says, “We are committed to ensuring that by August we deliver. The total cost for this project is 194 million and we hope we will deliver it within budget. We ensure that the contractor on site sticks to timelines. Of course, there have been delays because he only started in November, but at least we are on 15% of the 20% required.”
