Lesufi optimistic over R2 billion investment at Vaal malt facility

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says he is optimistic over a R2 billion investment in Sedibeng in the Vaal.

He says the new Heineken Soufflet Malt facility marks a long-term commitment to strengthening the country’s brewing and farming communities.

The facility is expected to create sustainable employment and contribute to economic growth in the province.

Lesufi was speaking during a walkabout at the facility where construction is still ongoing.

“The construction here is going to really create huge opportunities for our people. I mean to have R2 billion investment in the middle of Sedibeng and Midvaal, it’s an unthinkable investment. So, we want to thank those who have been hard at work, the municipality in particular.”

Over 300 permanent and contract jobs are expected to be created by the project.

Heineken Supply Chain Director, Johan van Zyl, says the project is scheduled to be completed by June next year.

“We are also going to aggressively invest in skills development. As you can imagine, it is the latest technology that we will be using. We used to source our malt globally, COVID-19 taught us that is much better to localise your value chains.”
