ANC Gauteng Chairperson Panyaza Lesufi says over 65 percent of residents in the Marry Me informal settlement in Pretoria are undocumented foreign nationals.

The area gained prominence after six community patrollers were killed in a brutal attack.

He was speaking on the first day of the two-day African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT) Lekgotla at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways.

He was sharing his experience at an informal settlement in Pretoria where Lesufi says situations like these should be allowed to prevail in the country.

“I went to an area called, Marry Me and I can tell you; it’s not Marry Me alone. There are many other similar things that are like Marry Me. We can’t have an informal settlement where over 65 percent of its citizens are undocumented foreign citizens in our own country. It must come to an end; we must be very firm. There is no country that can agree that you have people that you don’t know who they are, where they come from, where they sleep, what they do, and they are in our country doing as they wish. We must be very firm; you document yourself or you leave us in peace,” says Lesufi.

Lesufi says if the issue of undocumented foreign nationals is not addressed, the country will continue to fail to deliver services to its citizens.

The Premier says everyone knows their willingness to work with those that are willing to develop the country, however, they cannot surrender the country to criminals.

“And I have said this to Comrade President Ramaphosa, I have said this to the relevant Ministers. If we can’t formally take a decision on how best we must manage this situation, we must forget about everything that we want to do. Our hospitals are overflowing, when South Africans are requested to come with an identity document to identify themselves. They don’t have to identify themselves, but they expect to be serviced. It creates problems,” said Lesufi.
