Lesufi denies DA claim of receiving leaked Public Protector report

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has denied the Democratic Alliance’s allegation that he received a leaked Public Protector report.

Lesufi disbanded the Crime Prevention Wardens, known as Amapanyaza, and said they would be re-purposed as part of the province’s Traffic Police and Special Law Enforcement.

He made the announcement just hours before advocate Kholeka Gcaleka officially released her report, in which she found that the wardens were irregular and unlawful.

She recommended that they be reclassified.

Speaking to the SABC News, Lesufi was adamant that he didn’t know the contents of the report before it was released.

“It was not leaked, I wasn’t even aware that she was going to release a report and I’m excited about that report, to be quite frank, because the thing we are trying to get for almost three years, that report said we must do it in 30 days and there are some responsibilities that me, Police Minister, Justice Minister, we must do within 180 days so it’s not a bad report. We didn’t pre-empt it, we released it long before the PP released the report. They are not going to lose their jobs, we are reconfiguring them and the Public Protector said reconfiguration is the correct approach.”- Reporting by Ntombi Sithubi
