Two Lesedi Secondary School learners accused of fatally stabbing another learner have been released on bail by the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates’ Court in Gauteng.
Twenty-year-old Grade 12 learner Mlehalinye Montasi was freed on R6,000, while 19-year-old Kgotlhello Mathabathe who is in Grade 10 was granted R3,000 bail.
They are both charged with premeditated murder after allegedly stabbing and killing Grade 10 learner Lethabo Mokonyane on the 17th of June.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says the matter has been postponed to the 11th of October.
“In court, the state opposed their release on bail. However, the magistrate granted them bail with the conditions that the accused should be subjected to correctional supervision and comply with all the imposed rules,” Mahanjana adds.
The issue of safety in schools in South Africa has been a growing concern.
