Lekganyane dismisses bid to recuse Arendse at Ad Hoc Committee

The chairperson of Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee, Soviet Lekganyane, has decided not to remove the evidence leader, Advocate Norman Arendse, at this stage.

The committee is probing allegations of corruption in the criminal justice system. It received a letter from the South African Public Colleges Organisation (SAPCO) calling for the recusal of Arendse, accusing him of being bias against some witnesses.

However, committee members concluded that, as it is almost nearing its conclusion it would be ill-advised to remove Arendse now especially in the absence of evidence.

“The recommendation by that organisation to remove the evidence leader is not considered prudent by the committee, given the significant amount of work already done and that the proceedings are nearing conclusion. However, the grievances that have been raised are not taken for granted,” says Lekganyane.

Extension of deadline

The Parliament’s Ad Hoc committee will consider to request another extension on its deadline.

Its original deadline was end of October last year. Its latest deadline is the 20th of February 2026.

Private investigator Paul O’Sullivan will finally testify in-person on Tuesday before the Ad Hoc Committee.

Initially O’Sullivan requested to testify virtually citing security concerns.
