Learners accused of fatally stabbing Mamelodi teen to apply for bail

Two learners from Lesedi Secondary School in Pretoria charged with the premeditated murder of a fellow learner are expected to apply for bail when the case resumes in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Grade 12 learner, 20-year-old Mlehalinye Motansi and 19-year-old grade 10 learner, Kgotlhello Mathabane, allegedly stabbed to death fellow grade 10 learner Lethabo Mokonyane outside the school gate last month.

Mokonyane was rushed to hospital where he died few hours later.

National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says the state will oppose bail.

“After the brief appearance in court, the matter was postponed to 07 July 2025 for a schedule 6 bail application.  The state intends to oppose their release on bail.”

Meanwhile, the tragic incident has prompted calls for urgent action to curb violence in schools and ensure the safety of learners across the country.
