The lead investigating officer, Bongani Meyiwa, is set to take the stand again this morning in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the High Court in Pretoria.

Meyiwa was fatally shot in 2014 while at the Vosloorus home of Kelly Khumalo’s family. Five accused, including Mthobisi Mncube, are currently on trial for the murder of the former Bafana Bafana captain.

On Monday, Brigadier Philani Gininda faced accusations of misleading the court by defense counsel Charles Mnisi.

Gininda had previously testified that a firearm depicted in a photograph from Mncube’s phone matched the one used in the crime. “It’s my observation that photo 38 depicts a rifle and pistol. This pistol looks similar to the firearm that discharged the bullet found at the crime scene,” Gininda says.

Mnisi challenged this, accusing Gininda of presenting his observation as fact. “Are you aware that what you stated here misled the magistrate? You didn’t say ‘in my view’ – you stated it as a fact. It’s perjury—you misled the magistrate,” Mnisi argued.

The trial continues.
