Labour Dept. to assist Ormonde collapse victims’ families with claims

The Department of Employment and Labour says it will provide support to families affected following the building collapse in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, on Monday.

The department says this includes assistance through the Compensation Fund where applicable.

Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Jomo Sibiya says information received by the department indicates that contractors linked to the site are registered with relevant compensation structures.

He says this will assist in processing claims.

“We have found that the main contractor is registered with them and the other two subcontractors are registered with us in compensation fund which will also assist in assisting the families and also paying compensation where it is due and where it’s necessary. And we can say that we have picked up as well that there are issues of those who are non-South Africans who are part of the deceased.”
