KZN to see warm weather ahead of New Year’s celebrations

People can look forward to warm weather in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) as they prepare for their New Year’s Eve celebrations, with temperatures dropping slightly on New Year’s Day.

Hot conditions can be expected on Wednesday in the north of the province.

However, South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecaster Thandiwe Gumede adds that there is a chance of showers and thundershowers from Wednesday afternoon going into the evening.

Gumede says there’s also a chance of showers and thundershowers over the province from around midday on Thursday.

Gumede explains which parts of the province may expect rain today.

“We are expecting an 80 percent chance of showers and thundershowers over the western parts, a 60 percent chance for most parts including the South Coast and the Midlands, and only a 30 percent chance for showers and thundershowers over the northeastern parts of KZN. The northeastern parts will include district municipalities like uMkhanyakude and King Cetshwayo,” says Gumede.

She says a Yellow Level 2 warning has been issued over the western parts and Midlands of KwaZulu-Natal today for severe thunderstorms, which may include heavy rain, flooding, excessive lightning, and heavy winds and hail.

“In terms of the alerts, we do have two alerts for severe thunderstorms for Thursday. The first one is a Yellow Level 4 alert for severe thunderstorms over the northeastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Then for the remainder of the province, we do have a Yellow Level 2 alert for severe thunderstorms. Those thunderstorms furthermore, can be accompanied by heavy downpours leading to flooding, excessive lightning, strong, damaging winds as well as hail,” adds Gumede.
