KZN to have additional roadblocks for remainder of Easter weekend

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Transport Department says it will be implementing additional roadblocks for the remainder of the Easter weekend.

It says with the high traffic volumes along the N3, the department is intensifying efforts to ensure safer roads during this holiday weekend.

KZN Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says there have been several arrests for drunk driving since the launch of their Easter road safety campaign.

Sibiya says more multi-disciplinary roadblocks will be rolled out today and tomorrow to ensure safety for road users.

“We have been recording more than 1 500 cars coming through our toll gates. We’ve also launched an anti-crime software called Umemezi Wezimoto,. That’s why we are now talking about nine motorists who have been arrested for drinking and driving. Today the MEC was just around Qalakabusha Correctional Service Centre where a motorist was drunk carrying passengers was arrested and sent straight to the cells. MEC Duma is very firm that the team of traffic officers they must aim for prison term of six years this will serve as this will serve as a deterrent.”
