The Long Distance Taxi Association in KwaZulu–Natal, which had previously embarked on a strike after their operating permits were withheld, says they are relieved that their permits have now been issued.
The association’s Bhekisisa Nzuza says the permits came at the right time when thousands of commuters and churchgoers travel to various destinations for the Easter holidays. Nzuma says the safety of commuters remains a priority.
“As part of preparing for safety during these holidays, we deployed people who are checking if tires are in good condition, and we instructed taxi owners to service their vehicles, as we will be traveling long distances. Our cars travel seven hours to Mpumalanga, six hours to Manguzi, ten hours to Mozambique, and nine hours to Swaziland; we are ready to ferry our passengers.”
These motorists traveling to Durban say they were delighted to see law enforcement along the N3 highway.
“I feel safe and confident that I’m safe, the community is safe, and that whoever is trying to steal the cars and whoever is trafficking drugs and people and everything that is illegal, they will be caught,” says a motorist.
“It’s very comforting to see the presence of the police, and it’s a very good job, well done,” says another motorist.
