The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department says it has identified areas that it will focus on in its Easter road safety campaign.
Traffic volumes are expected to surge to more than 1 500 vehicles per hour at tollgates across the province starting next Thursday on the eve of Good Friday.
The provincial government will deploy over 800 law enforcement officers to the identified areas.
Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says, “We are targeting hazardous areas as well as secondary cities where you have quite a number of people that are visiting. If you look at Richards Bay, for instance, 30 law enforcement officers from national, Durban – 40, Pietermaritzburg – 20 , Port Shepstone – 30 members.”
“The MEC indicated that the law enforcement officers must have no mercy. He has affirmed his commitment to work with the National Prosecuting Authority in order to ensure a successful prosecution and conviction of a prison sentence of six years. Those motorists found to be driving under the influence of alcohol, there is no way that we can negotiate with a drunkard.”
