Traffic officers seen during a road safety operation in KwaZulu-Natal.
The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department is intensifying its road safety operations as it cracks down on traffic violations ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations. Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says the department’s festive season operations have resulted in a 9% decrease in fatalities compared to the same period last year.
Sibiya says around 2 800 drunk drivers have been arrested since mid-December.
He says in the latest operation they took several vehicles with fraudulent permits off the road at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza in Durban.
“This team has been crisscrossing the province. It’s a roving team. If you look at the figures, 2 800 drunk drivers arrested. We see a decrease in terms of fatalities. We are talking about 9% decrease in fatalities, talking about around 6% decrease in crashes. MEC Duma has expressed his appreciation and has paid tribute to the RTI officers, obviously working with the National Traffic Police.”
