A runner cools down with water.
People in KwaZulu-Natal, especially in Durban and surrounding areas, have been asked to take care to stay hydrated in the excessive heat.
With maximum temperatures that can reach the upper 30s, the spokesperson for one of the private ambulances in KwaZulu-Natal, Garrith Jamieson, warns that it can be equivalent to 40 degrees Celsius if humidity is taken into account.
He has urged people to drink lots of water.
Jamieson says special attention should be given to the elderly, children and animals.
“Dehydration happens a lot quicker than we tend to realise. And we would like to encourage you to drink a lot of fluid, water specifically, to take in what you sweat out. If you are exercising or doing heavy work, please remember to stay hydrated at all times. As for the elderly and young, please take care of them. Obviously, they are more susceptible to dehydration and comatose at a late stage.”
