KZN residents urged to remain vigilant amid severe weather

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal, effective Friday until midnight.

The eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to remain vigilant as forecasts indicate severe and widespread showers and intense thunderstorms across most parts of the province.

Weather forecaster Edward Engelbrecht says the warning applies to most areas of KwaZulu-Natal, excluding the northeastern part of the province.

“We have issued a level four warning for the severe thunderstorms over most parts of KZN except the northeastern part. And that’s going to be so, that means level four, it’s low likelihood for significant impacts. And that may lead to strong, damaging winds, excessive lightning, and heavy downpours, leading to flooding of susceptible roads. And that’s going to be mostly due to a cold front that’s moved south past the country. And then with that, we also expect scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers, mostly for the afternoon,” says Engelbrecht.

SAWS warned that the severe thunderstorms could bring heavy downpours, strong, damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning. These conditions may result in damage to infrastructure, property, vehicles, livelihoods and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads and low-lying areas.
