KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has expressed concern over the lack of clarity about the renewal of Provincial Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s contract. The contract expires on the 31st of March. Legislation provides for a premier to endorse the appointment of a provincial commissioner made by the national head of the police.
Ntuli says he has met with National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola several times about Mkhwanazi’s contract.
“I must start by mentioning that I am quite that the contract is being renewed. The reason being is the consultation we had in December with the national commissioner and the recent engagement we had in Cape Town where we were all in agreement that this is the right thing to do to renew the contract of the PC. However, one must raise a concern that if one is not out into finality and if there is no formal endorsement of the intentions, it remains an issue which brings uncertainty in particular the business sector and investors.”
