Cash in Transit vehicles parked
Police in KwaZulu-Natal have expressed concern over the spate of cash-in-transit heists in the province. There have been at least three reported heists in the past three weeks.
Crime statistics released in February showed an increase in cash-in-transit heists and truck hijackings in the period between October and December last year.
Cash-in-transit robberies saw KZN in the lead with 10 out of 29 cases nationally, followed by Gauteng with 8.
KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says they have acknowledged the concerning rise in such heists.
“With the work that the police have been doing in KZN, there was a time it was quiet because we were dealing with them, but now we have seen this surge of some sort. We are analysing with intelligence, we are also working together with those concerned in transporting the money to find out if there is some inside information, because how does it happen that every time a vehicle is hit, there’s money inside? It shows that somewhere, somehow, there is intel from the inside. It could be from the police side, or it could be from the companies themselves that transport money that at this time, a vehicle will be moving on this road with so much money.”
