The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has commended the police in the province for their decisive response in the search for the suspects linked to the murder of Johannesburg student Olorato Mongale.

This after Philangenkosi Makhanya, believed to have been the main suspect, was shot and killed yesterday morning in a shootout with police at an apartment in Amanzimtoti in the South of Durban.

Police say they’re still tracking other suspects.

Thirty year old Mongale was found dead after she went on a date with her alleged killer, who had picked her up from her residential complex.

KZN Premier Thami Ntuli, through his spokesperson, Lindelani Mbatha, also commended the community for assisting police in their search for the suspects in the murder, which he says has deeply shaken the country.

“The honourable premier says the swift action by SAPS in tracking down those responsible sends a powerful message that there will be no refuge for criminals in the province. The outcome of the shootout demonstrates the commitment to ensuring that justice is neither delayed nor denied. The Premier salutes community members who demonstrated absolute bravery in assisting the police.”
