An anti-bulyying sign.
The National Prosecuting Authority in KwaZulu-Natal says it’s alarmed at the rise of bullying incidents in schools.
According to Anti-Bullying NGOs, around 57 per cent of South African learners have been bullied at least once in their lives.
A video circulating on social media is one of the reasons that prompted the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to intervene.
In the video a learner from Kwa-Mashu township is seen assaulting another learner inside the school premises.
The NPA has launched a campaign to educate both learners and educators about bullying.
Bonnie Currie Gamwo from the NPA says the training will also deal with how to handle bullying incidents.
“These learners will be trained to identify what bullying is, they will be trained to deal with bullying by doing the necessary identification and referral to an educator. That educator will be the life orientation teacher at a school who is trained to deal with a child that has displayed certain behaviour but what is important about this campaign is that we also pushing the message that acts of bullying are also acts of crime. They are criminal and we will prosecute in the appropriate circumstances,” says Gamwo.
